Ceramic Safety, Care & Packaging FAQ

A little guidance to help you choose and enjoy your handmade ceramics.

What does “food-safe” mean?

Food-safe describes suitability for contact with food during a piece’s intended use. It does not automatically mean a piece is suitable for cooking, microwaving, dishwashing, or every type of food storage. Follow the individual product’s stated use and care instructions. If food use is not specified, ask us before using the piece with food or drinks.

Can decorative pottery be used as tableware?

Use decorative-only pieces for display, not for preparing, serving, or storing food or drinks.

What about lead-free glazes and certification?

We work exclusively with lead-free-certified artisan workshops in Mexico.

Always follow the product’s intended use; never use a piece marked “not for food use” with food or drinks. For general background, see the FDA’s guidance on traditional pottery.

Will my piece look exactly like the photo?

Each pottery piece is individually handcrafted and hand-painted. Details such as colors, floral details, and painted patterns may differ from the photograph. These artistic differences make each piece unique.

How should I care for my ceramics?

Hand washing is recommended for all ceramics and pottery pieces. Use mild soap and a soft sponge, then dry carefully. Do not assume dishwasher, microwave, oven, or freezer suitability unless the individual listing explicitly confirms it.

How are fragile ceramics packed, and what if something arrives damaged?

We pack each item with paper, bubble wrap, and compostable packing peanuts. Our boxes are also lined internally with bubble wrap and labeled “Fragile.”

We are not responsible for small, minor damage that occurs during transit. If an item arrives completely damaged or with damage that impairs its use, please email orders@luztierra.com within 5 business days of delivery. Include your order number, a description of the damage, and clear photos of the item and packaging.

We will need to file a claim with the shipping carrier, so please retain the item and all packaging while the claim is reviewed. Please read our shipping and damage policy for full details.
